Smart Urban Security in Innsbruck’s Historic Center
Client: City of Innsbruck
Project Partner: Yunex Traffic
Technology: FAAC JS 80 HA Automatic Bollards
Scope: Urban Security / Smart City
Status: Test in progress
Context
The historic center of Innsbruck, a highly frequented tourist and cultural area, requires a careful balance between security, accessibility, and quality of life.
During peak periods, such as the recent Christmas season, when approximately 1.2 million visitors walked through the city center, ensuring protection and safe pedestrian flows becomes a strategic challenge.
The Challenge
To meet the city’s needs, the project had to address several key objectives:
- Protect pedestrian areas without altering the historic urban fabric
- Enable controlled yet flexible access for residents, services, and emergency vehicles
- Integrate the solution into an existing centralized control system
- Ensure reliable operation even during periods of high traffic
FAAC Solution – implemented by Yunex Traffic
The project was implemented by Yunex Traffic and involved the deployment of a comprehensive system combining advanced technology with intelligent management:
- Installation of 10 bollards across two strategic access points (per location: 3 fixed and 2 retractable bollards)
- Intelligent time control: free access from 6:00 to 10:30, with automatic switch to protection mode for the remainder of the day
- Automatic recognition of emergency and service vehicles, ensuring fast and secure passage
- Integration with multiple control centers, making the system an active component of the city’s overall security strategy
Benefits
The system delivers tangible benefits for residents, visitors, and city operations:
- Enhanced protection in high-traffic areas
- Safer pedestrian spaces without intrusive barriers
- Centralized and flexible access management
- Seamless integration of technology, urban planning, and operational teams
Conclusion
The Innsbruck project demonstrates how FAAC smart bollard technology can be an enabling infrastructure for cities that are safer, more accessible, and more livable, balancing security with quality of life.
